Chattanooga Zoo

New Giraffe Party Yard

Tiki King is often called upon by Zoos across the country, however we have never been called upon to build a giraffe enclosure. This was a new and exciting project to be involved in. The project entailed 3 key areas. First was constructing a large log chest rail, that could hold 10,000 pounds in case a Giraffe got lazy and leaned up against it. basically, a fence to keep the Giraffe’s inside. Interesting note Giraffe’s are pretty much afraid of everything. This chest rail was a bit of an undertaking drilling 3’ holes in the rocky mountainous terrain of Chattanooga TN. The 2nd part was to construct a pedestrian barricade 10’ off the chest rail so when the Giraffes lean over, they are unable to reach the visitors of the park. The 3rd section was to build a massive Eucalyptus pergola on an elevated platform which is now referred to as a feeding platform. This is a space where guest can go up and feed the giraffes by hand. It is always interesting working in an active zoo and learning about the animals we have been hired to build a new home for.
